History and Synopsis:

Published in 1972, Michael Murphy's, "Golf in the Kingdom," is the best selling golf fiction of all time. It has been in continuous print and sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. It is considered by many to be a classic of sports literature.  Penguin, the book's publisher, is planning a special edition of GITK to be launched concurrently with the feature film's release. The special edition will include photos from the film and a new forward by Michael Murphy.

The feature film, "Golf in the Kingdom" is a simple tale of a young man's transformational journey that is humorous, poignant and profound.  We meet Michael Murphy on a train headed to Scotland. It is 1956 and Murphy has just graduated from Stanford University with a philosophy degree. He is on his way to India on a quest for life's answers when he decides to stop in Scotland to play one last round of golf at the Links at Burningbush. Paired with a mysterious and eccentric teacher named Shivas Irons, he is led through a round of phenomenal golf, swept into a world where extraordinary powers are unleashed in a backswing Shivas calls "true gravity." A wild whiskey night of adventure and revelation follows, and leads to a glimpse of Seamus MacDuff, the "teacher's teacher," who haunts a ravine off Burningbush's thirteenth fairway!

Why does a book about a 1950's golf instructor, Shivas Irons, still resonate after all these years? Is it the phrases Shivas coined like: "Play it as it lies" or "It's the walk in between," or the term, "True Gravity?" Or is it the character, Shivas Irons himself, the golf instructor every golfer dreams to play golf with? Or maybe it's the unexplainable moments on the links that golfers can never forget.
